Squirrels and Bees: An Unlikely Partnership

Bee removal from roof damaged by squirrels

Someone once told me while I was removing a hive from a roofline that he knew the squirrels and bees were working together. While there is no conspiracy, there is some truth to it.

The squirrels and tree rats of North Texas chew holes in our attics and roofs, creating perfect entrances for bees. Bees move in and squirrels make a new home somewhere else. Patching with metal flashing or chicken wire is the only way to keep them both out.

It is not the bees destroying your property — it is those cute furry tree squirrels your neighbor feeds causing all the damage. Regular inspection of your roofline, soffits, and eaves for rodent damage can help prevent bee infestations before they start.
