Local bees are always a potential source of swarms. Many cities actually do not have laws prohibiting beekeepers from running hives in their backyard. These hives often swarm due to poor technique or inexperienced beekeepers, and they end up in a neighbor's roof.

Swarms from backyard hives are also pretty common. When a colony gets too large, it naturally splits — the old queen leaves with about half the workers to find a new home while the remaining bees raise a new queen.
